I’m taking my lead off of a Kotaku (gasp) article regarding price point for multiplayer only games. Feel free to continue if interested.
The article posits that multiplayer only games shouldn’t be charging full price when you’re essentially not getting full features. And some expect additional payments for future content. To me if it’s not worth it people won’t pay for it.
Maybe I’m old fashioned but I honestly prefer a single player experience to a multiplayer one. I maybe get into one multiplayer game per year, because of the commitment it takes to get competent and stay competent. However with single player I can play at my leisure. And I can come back to it when I wish. This brings me in a really round about way to my leading image. If that game was MP only, I couldnt go back now and drop some Tangos. RIP Rainbow Six.

Ah, the memories. Raven Shield team minions aren’t the sharpest rolls in the breadbasket, but it’s a really good way to incorporate a high lethality system. “You died? Well at least you have several other guys to throw on the altar... but do you really want to do that? The next guys in the pipe are kind of dumb.” I had a lot of fun with it back in the day, both multi and single.

It shouldnt be $60 for a mulitplayer game only that is stripped bare and will require a $50 season pass for more content.
YES IM LOOKING AT YOU BATTLEFRONT

Played Battlefront for a weekend and returned it via Origin’s “Great Game” deal.
What a sad game...it was so pretty, but so light in content. I’d hoped EA learned their lesson with Titanfall.
I’ll relook at it when the price drops after the holidays and new content is out.

It’ll be dead in three months most likely...like Titanfall and Evolve

Singleplayer is for me. I never play MMOs or utilize the multiplayer in anything. And even in those games that are mainly “multiplayer” (like strategy games) I always choose to compete against NPCs.
Also, I do believe there is something to be said for charging less for multiplayer only games. It looks like Blizzard is doing that for Overwatch as I’ve heard they’ll be selling that game for 40 dollars, instead of the usual 60.

I played the hell out those games especially online. Sometimes though I’d just do a maximum amount tango hunt. I loved on the fly go codes.

I’m kind of on the fence on it. There has better be a ton of content or maybe an included DLC free. My biggest worry with multiplayer only games is the eventual server shut down. I don’t have Battlefront 3 yet, so I can’t weigh in on that.

I’m not opposed to MMOs but I think they should be F2P and be reasonable on the features that have to be paid for.

I certainly understand your concerns, and I will admit, some of the practices with doing what some are doing to multiplayer only games is certainly uncool *coughseasonpassbullshitcough*. However my opinion is, if the multiplayer is strong enough to stand on its own, I don’t mind not having a single player. I would rather have an online only multiplayer game that has enough substance and meat on its bones to be worth more than rental, rather than have some half-assed singleplayer mode available that the dev team didn’t give two shits about.

Single player will always and forever be better IMO.
Multiplayer is fun, but honestly I only enjoy it if I have friends to play with. Playing with rando’s can be good if you get a good group, but it usually doesn’t happen.
What I really wish there was more of was co-operative multiplayer with bots. I would love to hop into a 64 player server of battlefield with a friend or two and play a round against bots. Are bots easy? Sure, but that’s fun. I don’t play games for a challenge, I play to get away from the stresses of everyday life and have a release.
The current trend to trickle out content is annoying as hell. I refuse to buy Battlefront because of the DLC model, but even Rockstar’s “free” content is bullshit. That new update for GTA V next week is going to be awesome, but when I play GTA I play with 2 or 3 friends and dick around: I don’t win a ton of money from playing competitive multiplayer, but all the new cars and stuff are really expensive. How do you get money? You either do missions and grind it out, which I don’t have interest in, or pay real money for in-game cash. So while the content itself doesn’t cost anything it’s not really free even though I paid $60 for the game (and I did it twice! I have it on two systems!)

Honestly that’s become less of an issue in recent time than you’d think.
Battlefield 3 is like 5 years old but still has servers.

If you’re looking for a great single player shooter, this is worth checking out. You’ll find a lengthy campaign, good squad AI, amazing cover system, and actual smart play versus COD-brand “run aroud and shoot everything”
There’s also Crysis if you haven’t played it yet. The campaign is better than that of the original Halo.

I agree with you. If I can put in 60 hours of online play it’s worth it. However, I haven’t played many multiplayer only games that can. Also as a PC only player, rentals aren’t really an option.

Bot match Battlefield would be nice like in Battlefield 2, but I think that was a smaller size, 32 maybe.
Honestly, I usually lose interest before most DLC hits.

I did grab Future Soldier on sale a while back. Did enjoy it, though the Original Ghost Recon was the best.
Crysis/Warhead was amazing regardless of what a lot of people said. The sequels not so much.
I really wish a good tactical FPS shooter existed. I really tried the ARMA series but, they really aren’t fun. At all.

I play both, but I do love single player games and I don’t think there is enough emphasis for them in the AAA industry.
I’ve always thought that AAA games are made (and by AAA I mean million/billion $$$ industry games) with money over passion, and that sometimes the best games are made by slightly smaller companies who aren’t JUST trying to make money, but also make a good game.

I usually only buy AAA games, largely because I only have time for a few games a year what with work and suxh. And I want to be wowed with eye candy. I think that 90% of the time multiplayer centric games are the easy way out for production companies. Let the players make their own story. Screw the plot, voice actors, scripting and narrative.

Yeah but in the case of Forza Horizon 2 I could’ve paid $100 for the game (I got it for $50 because I have xbox live gold, which is of course another cash grab) and I don’t even have all the DLC, I would have to spend at least another $40 if I want the whole thing which is pretty ridiculous. I get what you mean that multiplayer games are the best way if you want to make money, but that’s kind of besides the point.
I guess you could try games like Metro 2033 and last light for good single player experiences and you can bet they’ll be SUPER cheap (even for the redux ones, never mind the originals) on Steam this sale, and they are god damn good lookin games.
